FAQ Answers (Updated 7 Dec 08)

What does "XCRTM" stand For?
We're not really sure.   It could stand for "eXchangeable Caliber Rifle"; or, perhaps, "eXtremely Cool Rifle"; or, maybe, "eXraordinary Combat Rifle".   Other meanings could be "eX-treme Combat Reliability", or "eX-treme Combat Rifle".   All these meanings are appropriate.

Where is the XCRTM Made?
The rifle was designed and is manufactured completely in the U.S.A.  When you by from Robinson Armament Co., you support U.S. Industry.

How Do I Order an XCRTM?
For ordering instructions Click Here.

Why is the XCRTM the best combat rifle?
The XCR excels over its competitors in the following areas:
Ergonomics - All manual operations can be done while the operator look through the sights.  That includes charging, magazine release, bolt release, and safety/selector manipulation.
Accuracy - The XCR
is accurate because of its fully-floated barrel and unique design.   It has lower recoil than the M-16 which keeps the XCR on target between shots.
Durability - All parts are heavy duty and made to last
Reliability - The design makes it feed, cycle, extract, and eject better than other rifles.
Flexibility - With one lower receiver, the XCR
can be configured as a rifle, carbine, and for CQC (Close Quarters Combat).  Furthermore, it can be configured to fire a range of existing and new cartridges such as 5.56 NATO, 6.8 SPC, and 7.62x39mm.
Accessorability - The XCR
can accept most of the M-16 accessories including, sights, muzzle devices, grips, M4 Buttstocks.
Maintainability - The XCR
can be field stripped in minutes.  Depot maintenance is also easy without many special tools.

Is the XCR piston driven?
Yes.

Does the rifle have an adjustable gas system?
We are shipping all XCR rifles with a Five-Setting, Quick Adjust Gas System.  No tools are needed other than the tip of a cartridge.  There's even a setting specifically for the use of sound suppressors.

What kind of bolt does it have?
The bolt and extractor of the XCR is more like that of an AK47 than that of an M16.   The XCR uses a proprietary three bolt system with an proprietary extractor.  This bolt and extractor combination provide extreme durability and reliability.

Where is the charging Handle?
The charging handle is very much like that of the FAL.  It is a non-reciprocating handle located on the left side of the rifle.  It has a forward assist attached to the handle.  Because the XCR functions so reliably and does not foul itself, the forward assist is used mostly when partially opening the action to see if a round is chambered.

What options are available?
(Note: check the ordering part of our website for current availability of these options.)

Caliber Conversions  We are offering the rifle in the following calbiers:  5.56 NATO, 6.8 Rem SPC, and 7.62x39mm.
Buttstocks
There are many stocks available for the XCR.  Currently we have:  folding tube stocks, fixed tube stocks, collapsing M4 stock, folding/collapsing M4 stocks.   More stocks are under development.

What Other Stocks will fit the XCR?
We manufacture two stock "adapters" for the XCR.  These adapters are made for stocks based on the M4 collapsing stock used on the M4 variant of the M-16 rifle.  All the M4 variant stocks slide on a buffer tube.  There are commercial and military spec buffer tubes.   Our M4 Collapsing Stock Adapter and our M4 Folding/Collapsing Stock Adapters will accept  both the commercial and military buffer tubes.   This means that most stocks intended for M4 type rifles can work with our stock adapters.  You can use M4 type stocks made by VLTOR, Magpul, etc.    When buying a stock, make sure the plastic portion fits the buffer tube.  It's best to by both the plastic stock part and the buffer tube from the same manufacturer.     Though M4 stocks will fit on the XCR, they are quite wide.  We are working on a thin profile stock which both folds and collapses.  It will be available early in 2009.

What is necessary to convert the XCRTM from one caliber to the other?
Only the bolt, barrel, magazine and brass deflector need to be change to change calibers.   It takes less than 5 minutes for the caliber conversion.

How long does it take to change calibers?
The caliber change can be accomplished in less than 5 minutes.  Watch the Video on caliber change.

What Kind of Barrel Does the XCR Have?
Regardless of Caliber, the XCR's barrel is free floating. This means that the barrel only touches the receiver at the base (where the barrel extension is).  This ensures good accuracy even when the rifle is hot.

Are there 5.56 NATO 1/7 Twist Barrels Available?
Right now we do not have 1/7 Twist 5.56 NATO Barrels.  We may make some in 2009.

What threading do the XCR Barrels have and what muzzle devices will work on the barrels?
The 5.56 NATO barrels have a 1/2 x 28 TPI thread, the 6.8 SPC and 7.62x39mm barrels have a 5/8x24 TPI thread.   Most M-16 muzzle devices will work on the 5.56 NATO barrels.  Most .308 muzzle devices will work on the 6.8 and 7.62x39mm barrels.

What magazines does the XCRTM  take?
For 5.56 NATO (.223 Rem.), M16 magazines can be used, including the drum magazines like the Beta - C mag.  For 6.8 SPC, a special 6.8 magazine is used.  They are made by C-Products, LLC and Precision Reflex, Inc.    For 7.62x39mm there are 10 and 30 round magazines.  The 30 round magazines are made by C-Products, LLC.

Are the barrels chrome-lined?
The XCR barrels are chrome lined unless you specify otherwise.

What kind of trigger does the XCRTM have?
The trigger is two-stage.  M-16 trigger parts will not work.  We are close to releasing a match set of trigger parts.    We can do single stage triggers if the order is big enough.

Why doesn't the XCR come with sights?
The XCR does not come with sights because decent sights are very expensive.  Most flip-up, co-witnessing combat sights range from $100 to $200 per sight.  Because of the expense of these sights, we don't force the purchaser to choose.  We do currently offer Midwest industries sights.  You may also  want to consider Troy Industries, ARMS, and other sights on the market.

Though the rifle doesn't come with sights, you do get a 1913 Standard Rail at the 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions for no extra charge.  Compared with other similar products, the XCR is a steal.

Is the XCRTM compatible with M16 accessories.
The XCRTM is compatible with most M16 rail accessories and M16 pistol grips.    The top rail to top of stock height is the same as the M4, therefore all sights and top rail accessories for the M4 can be used on the XCRTM.

What materials are used in the manufacture of the XCR™?
There's a lot of misinformation that goes around.  Some claim that a receiver made from billet is better somehow than a forging.  This is simply not the case.  The XCR has a lower receiver which is forged from 7075 T6 aluminum and then machined.  Forgings are stronger than billets or castings.  The XCR upper receiver is extruded from a proprietary aircraft aluminum and then machined.  The XCR is designed so that the lower and upper receivers do not receive much wear.

Short Barreled Rifles (SBRs) and Personal Defense Weapons (PDWs).
We currently produce XCR
SBRs in 5.56 NATO with barrels as short as 11".  We are working on a 9" Barrled XCR PDW.   At the end of 2008, we'll be able to discuss availability.

Will there be 6.5 Grendel, 5.45x39mm, .22 LR or other caliber conversion kits available for the XCR?
We are working on the 6.5 currently.  We can do 5.45x39mm and other calibers which can fit in an M-16 magazine well.  These calibers are very possible and probable.  We just cannot work on them now.   These are things that can be worked on after a ban.  We're focusing on making more receivers and the .308.

Will the XCR ever be able to shoot .308?
The XCR-L frame will not be able to shoot .308.  It's too small.

Will there be an XCR in .308?
We designed .308 Model which we have named the XCR Medium (XCR-M).    We do not have a date for this rifle but we estimate that it will be available in early 2009.  It will handle .308, .243, 7mm 08 and other calibers based on the .308 case.

Can one get an XCR in other than black?
Yes.  However, this is a custom service at this point.  We can refer you to someone who can paint you rifle for an additional fee.  We hope to be offering colors in 2009.

What barrel and chamber is used on your 6.8?
We chambered our 6.8 barrels to the specifications recommended by Silver State Arms which makes the 6.8 ammunition.   It is the latest chamber design and can handle the faster loads.  We use a 4 groove barrel with a 1/10 twist rate.  The XCR in 6.8 seems to have less recoil that other rifles in this caliber.  In fact, the recoil of the 5.56 and 6.8 seem the same.
